Over the next few months, we’ll be profiling our people and the work they do. We want to give you an insight into the pool building process – the more you know, the better placed you’ll be to make those nitty-gritty decisions along the way. I sat down with Mark Handley to get his top three hot tips for getting started on your backyard makeover.

Plan, Stan

Never start without a plan! It’s that simple. A great landscape design concept will get you the most bang for your buck – it’s all about designing for purpose so you can realise the full potential of your space. Key to the planning stage is getting the experts in. You’ll have a bunch of gorgeous ideas in your head about what you want, and a landscape designer has the practical skills and industry expertise to work out how to piece it all together. There’s heaps to think about when planning a backyard haven and this often goes beyond pure aesthetics. A landscape designer will help you think about scale, and create areas that flow and interact well with each other to get the most out of the space you have and work out the most efficient build possible.

 Mix It Up

Variety is absolutely critical to a stunning backyard. Mark’s advice is to pick a mixture of youthful and mature plants, so you’re not waiting around after the work is done to see your space come to life. Your awesome mood board is a great place to start, but your dreaming of plants that take years to mature, then you’re going to want some expert advice choosing subs. It’s also super helpful to have a professional on hand to help you work out the budgeting side of things. What you want for your build is to have your brand new landscape looking as complete as possible as quickly as possible, and a landscape designer will get you there, helping you keep the big picture in mind to ensure a seamless, successful build.

 We’re spending more time at home now than ever, and Mark’s top tip for a totally liveable backyard is to put a little love into it. This means thinking about all the opportunities your backyard could provide you with to connect – with family, with friends, with neighbours or colleagues. Have you considered putting in a pool? What about creating a designated BBQ area? Or a space for ball games, or a new trampoline? What about a firepit? Mark says too many people planning a new backyard underestimate the potential of the space in terms of just how much value it can add to your life. This is something you really want to get the experts in on – in just the same way you work with architects when building a home, Mark reckons it’s vital to consult with someone with the knowledge and experience to help you build a backyard that is purpose-focussed, and suits the needs of you and your loved ones.
