Building a pool in the Inner West? Here’s what you need to know.
No two Inner West blocks are the same, but after enough years building concrete pools across Sydney's inner west, the same handful of challenges turn up again and again. Here's what we've learned dealing with them - not in theory, in backyards.
Narrow side access (like Project Grove)
A lot of Inner West homes were built long before anyone thought about pool access - so a side passage under a metre wide isn't rare, it's just a Tuesday for us. We plan for it from the start: mini dig or hand-dig excavation, careful sequencing, protecting the brickwork and fence line on the way through. It's one of the most common site conditions we deal with across the Inner West, and we're pretty good at it by now.
Heritage controls
We handle heritage conversations with Inner West Council directly, working alongside your planners or consultants so you're not the one chasing paperwork. It adds a layer. It doesn't have to add stress.
Tight landscape ratios (like Project Lenore)
On the smaller, high-value blocks common across the inner west, there's a real tug-of-war between pool space and everything else - garden, entertaining, somewhere to just sit. We work through that balance with you early, because a yard that's all pool and no breathing room isn't actually a win. Get the ratio right, and it stops feeling like a compromise.
Long, narrow backyards (like Project Cecily)
The classic Inner West terrace yard - long, narrow, fenced in on both sides - doesn't want a cookie cutter pool design, so we don't force one in. Our designer works with the levels and layout of your space. Some of our best-proportioned pools have come out of yards everyone assumed were too awkward.
